Around the NFC South

Time for a look at the top headlines from around the NFC South and we’re not intentionally overlooking the Atlanta Falcons. But they’re in their bye week and there’s not much new in the way of local coverage.

Although he’s been playing guard for the past few seasons, Geoff Hangartner said he’s comfortable moving over to center to take over for the injured Ryan Kalil. Hangartner has been a starting center in the NFL and that should ease the transition. But there’s going to be a drop-off on Carolina’s offensive line because Hangartner is not on the same level as Kalil as a center and either Garry Williams or Jeff Byers will take over at right guard and they’re not as good there as Hangartner.

The team put linebacker Kenny Onatolu on injured reserve and filled his roster spot with cornerback Ron Parker. Basically, you can consider this a swap of special-teams players.

Quarterback Drew Brees said he doesn’t feel like the NFL is listening to complaints from him and other players. Just a thought, but maybe complaining about everything is a waste of time. Maybe Brees’ time would be better served focusing on getting his own team on track.

In a conference call with the New Orleans media, Carl Nicks did his best to make it sound like there’s no animosity toward his former team. But the All-Pro guard who signed with Tampa Bay in the offseason made references to how the Saints didn’t make him a contract offer until the eve of free agency and said they sent him packing. Sounds like a man who is carrying at least a bit of a grudge into Sunday’s game.

The Saints say there still is hope tight end Jimmy Graham (ankle) can play Sunday. But I wouldn’t take it as an encouraging sign that he was held out of Wednesday’s practice as the Saints returned to work following their bye.

The Bucs will wear their throwback uniforms Sunday. They’re 1-2 in throwback uniforms. The last time they won in them was 2009.

Victoria Horchak writes about how cornerback E.J. Biggers has stepped up to the challenge with Aqib Talib suspended for four games.
