New Orleans linebacker Jonathan Vilma is getting a second opinion on an unspecified injury, according to a league source.
Vilma flew to Philadelphia on Wednesday to meet with a doctor. The Saints frequently consult with a doctor in Philadelphia on sports hernias, but it’s unclear if that’s what Vilma’s injury is.
Coach Sean Payton declined to discuss the status of any injured players that missed Wednesday’s practice. Vilma has missed six of the last eight practices and the preseason opener and the team has not specified what his injury is.
Vilma, 31, missed six games last season with a knee injury. Vilma took a $3.8 million cut in pay during the offseason to remain with the Saints. But the restructured contract also allows Vilma to recoup up to $1.3 million if he participates in 38 percent of the team’s defensive snaps.
