CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A look at the Carolina Panthers' 53-man roster, keeping in mind general manager Dave Gettleman is scouring the waiver wire as you read:
Comment: Jimmy Clausen release no surprise. This position is set.
Comment: Jonathan Stewart is on PUP, so he'll miss at least the first five games. An area Gettleman will keep a close eye on if he can find quality experience for a backup.
Comment: A big preseason finale by Ted Ginn Jr. and Domenik Hixon made it easier for the Panthers to waive injured David Gettis, who appeared a lock until he pulled a hamstring.
Comment: Perhaps the best story of the Carolina preseason was Williams, a college basketball player who came out of the NFL's regional combine program to make the roster.
Comment: The starters for game one appear set with Gross, Bell, Wharton, Williams and Kalil. Quality depth and injuries still a concern, which is why there are 10 players here. Can you say waiver wire?
Comment: Solid group. A chance for rookie Star Lotulelei to start right away.
Comment: Easily the strength of the defense with Beason back and healthy.
Comment: The release of veteran corner Drayton Florence means the staff is happy with the progress of Josh Norman and Josh Thomas.
Comment: Solid throughout the preseason.
