Jeff Demps will need some time

TAMPA, Fla. -- If you were hoping to see former Olympic sprinter Jeff Demps working as a return man this Sunday for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it’s time to tone down your expectations.

Demps, who spent the summer competing in track and field, practiced with the Bucs for the first time on Wednesday. Coach Greg Schiano said it’s highly unlikely Demps will be activated for the game with New Orleans.

“Could he (play)?” Schiano said. “Well anyone could put on shoulder pads on and come out. But that wouldn’t be prudent. The guy hasn’t played football in, I don’t know how long. Over a year maybe, or close to a year. We get those two weeks where he is a roster exemption, that will be good for him, to get him back into the flow, and then we have to make some decisions.”

It’s a pretty safe bet the Bucs will use every bit of that two-week roster exemption before making a decision on Demps, who played running back in college at the University of Florida. The Bucs want to give Demps a look as a running back, receiver and return man.

Even if the Bucs don’t promote Demps to the regular roster at the end of the two-week period, they could release him and try to bring him back on the practice squad.
