Every NFL team nominates a player for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award each season. I haven’t seen the nominees for the Panthers, Buccaneers or Saints yet, but the Falcons just announced veteran receiver Brian Finneran as their nominee for this year.
Good choice. Finneran truly is one of the nicer guys I’ve met in covering the NFC South. He’s made a successful comeback after suffering major knee injuries in 2006 and 2007.
He’s also very active in the community, serving as a spokesman for breast cancer awareness, and is a regular when the Falcons make visits to children’s hospitals.
The league-wide winner of the award will be announced at the Super Bowl in February.
