TAMPA, Fla. -- We’re going to find out very quickly just how flexible Lovie Smith is.
The new coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is deeply rooted in the Tampa 2 cover scheme. But he’s walking into a situation where he inherits one of the best man-coverage cornerbacks in the league in Darrelle Revis.
Is Smith going to ask Revis, who is not a big fan of zone defense, to play Tampa 2 coverage? Or will Smith adjust his ways and let Revis play man-to-man defense?
My opinion on this is that Smith should adapt and let Revis do what he does best. Revis is an elite cover corner, so the Bucs should take advantage of that.
But, if Smith isn’t willing to adapt, it might be best to part ways with Revis. The Bucs could get something for him in a trade, and they would be off the hook for his full $16 million salary for 2014.
