Reid: Leman wasn't brought in as a spy

There had been some speculation that the Philadelphia Eagles signed linebacker Jeremy Leman to their practice squad specifically for Week 1. In other words, Leman spent camp and four preseason games with Carolina and the theory was the Eagles brought him in to get a look at Carolina’s playbook.

Things like that really do happen in the NFL, probably even more than you realize. But Philadelphia coach Andy Reid strongly denied that was his intention in signing Leman.

“We’re a little short of middle linebackers,’’ Reid said in a conference call with the Charlotte media. “That is the reason we brought him here. We mentioned to our media that Joe Mays isn’t going to play, he’s a middle linebacker so I brought another middle linebacker. So, bringing him here was important so we can go through practice and/or a game. So, he wasn’t brought here because he was a Carolina Panther, we brought him here because we thought he would fit in here.’’

And while Leman is fitting in, anybody think he might be answering a few questions about the Panthers?
