Buccaneers choose in-house RB help

As expected, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just announced the promotion of running back Mossis Madu from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

That comes after the Bucs lost Earnest Graham to a season-ending injury. Madu is an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma. The Bucs have had good recent history with undrafted free agents and guys who were promoted from their practice squad.

There could be a big need for Madu to follow that path. Starter LeGarrette Blount has missed the last two games with a knee injury. Even when Blount was healthy, the Bucs were sometimes hesitant to use him in situations where the running back was asked to be used in pass protections.

Graham usually filled that role. With Graham out, Kregg Lumpkin is Tampa Bay’s only other option at running back. Madu isn’t a big back (6-foot and 197 pounds), but he might be able to earn some playing time if he can show he can pick up pass protection.

The Bucs also announced they signed fullback Matt Clapp to take Madu's place on the practice squad. Clapp also is an Oklahoma product and was an undrafted free agent in 2010.
