Rams check in at No. 21 in uniform rankings

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- For nearly the entire time I've covered the Rams in which Twitter and social media have been a thing, I've tweeted pregame with injury information, inactives and other pertinent information.

But nothing drew the attention and, in many cases, ire of fans like the Sunday ritual of revealing what uniform combination the Rams were wearing in a given week.

No matter the color palette of the week, some fans would be downright outraged by what the Rams chose to wear. Blue on blue, white on white, a mixture of the two, toss in some gold pants, the football fashionistas of Rams nation would come out in full force. Sometimes, they would even take out their frustrations on me with a string of expletives that would make Andrew Dice Clay blush.

ESPN.com’s Paul Lukas unveiled his 2013 Uni Watch Power Rankings on Wednesday morning and the Rams checked in at No. 21 on the list.

Here’s what Lukas had to say about the Rams’ various looks:

"A good-looking team when they go white-over-blue. An OK-looking team when they go white-over-white. A terrible-looking team when they go blue-over-blue, which they did for more than half of last season's games. They were once a good-looking team in blue over white, but they've stopped wearing that combo. And the gold pants, now mothballed, are sorely missed. A franchise on the aesthetic decline despite the enduringly classic helmet."

Based on the feedback I’ve seen from fans, it’s hard to dispute the ranking or Lukas’ take on the different color combinations.

The blue on blue look generally draws the most hatred. Even former coach Mike Martz used to say the Rams looked like oversized grapes in the blue on blue.

Gold pants have also been a divisive issue amongst Rams fans, as most seem to either unabashedly love or hate them with no in between.

Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff recently discussed the future of the Rams' uniforms with the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Demoff said the organization is looking at a potential uniform change within the next five years.

The Rams have worn the 1999 blue and yellow throwbacks that they wore in Super Bowl XXXIV the past four seasons, and will wear them against Tampa Bay and Tennessee as tribute to that championship run this season.

Throwbacks are always a hit with players and fans, and it’s possible the Rams' next permanent look could be a return to one of their previous uniform incarnations.
