SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Quarterbacks are separated by their performance in the fourth quarter.
Colin Kaepernick is struggling in the final quarter during his second NFL season as a starter. In the 49ers’ past two games, both narrow defeats, Kaepernick and the offense struggled in the final drives with the game on the line.
According to Michael Bonzagni of ESPN Stats & Information, Kaepernick is ranked 34th among 35 eligible quarterbacks in completion percentage in the fourth quarter and beyond -- completing just 44.1 percent of his passes in the final frame.
He has thrown one touchdown and four interceptions in the fourth quarter, and his QBR is just 12.8, lower than all but two quarterbacks. Overall, Kaepernick’s QBR is a highly respectable 62.5, the 11th-highest mark in the league.
So, there is no doubt, Kaepernick’s production dramatically dips in the fourth quarter. Until he improves in that area, he will not be considered an elite player.
