If the Cardinals release safety Antrel Rolle, as expected, he becomes free to sign with any team.
A general manager told me before the Super Bowl he thought Rolle might first be subject to waivers, at which point other teams would have the right to claim his contract under its existing terms. No team would likely claim that contract for the same reasons Arizona doesn't want to honor it: Rolle would receive a $4 million bonus and $8.1 million salary.
Another NFL executive said Rolle would effectively be terminated and not subject to waivers because he has completed more than four NFL seasons (five in Rolle's case). That makes sense based on standard procedures governing terminations.
Either way, Rolle will hit the market if the Cardinals fail to pay the $4 million bonus or work out another contract with him.
