Free agency at the 'one-weak' mark

The first week of the NFL signing period has passed and 17 teams have yet to sign an unrestricted free agent from another team.

NFC West teams have signed A.J. Feeley (Rams), Fred Robbins (Rams), Rex Hadnot (Cardinals) and David Carr (49ers) as UFAs from elsewhere.

Twelve teams, including every NFC West member but Arizona, have not re-signed any of their own UFAs.

Seven teams -- Dallas, Carolina, Philadelphia, Seattle, New York (Giants), Tampa Bay and Oakland -- have not signed or re-signed a UFA.

Three thoughts:

  • Rules restricting the UFA pool to players with at least six years of experience have gutted this crop of free agents;

  • Teams have proceeded cautiously and with restraint into the uncapped year;

  • Teams might spend more freely if they could be certain a salary cap would not return (a reimposed cap could conceivably force teams to account for deals signed during the uncapped period).
