Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher stood up for the Cardinals on the CBS postgame show Sunday, on one condition: That the Arizona coaching staff remains patient enough to stick with the running game against the Giants or Panthers in the divisional round.
Cowher hired Ken Whisenhunt as the Steelers' tight ends coach in 2001. He promoted Whisenhunt to offensive coordinator in 2004. In keeping with our previous item, Cowher drove home the importance of the Cardinals' play-action passing game in beating the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday. He urged his former understudy to keep running back Edgerrin James involved in the offense.
Whisenhunt probably doesn't need any advice on the running game. Getting the ball to James makes too much sense, and Anquan Boldin's injury situation makes the spread offense less tempting.
