Bill Nayes is back in the NFC West after spending the past three seasons at the University of Wisconsin. The 49ers have hired Nayes -- Mike Holmgren's former longtime associate -- to serve Mike Singletary as special assistant to the head coach.
Nayes fills one of those administrative positions we hear little about. He was with Holmgren in Green Bay and later Seattle. The 49ers' general manager, Scot McCloughan, was also with Holmgren for quite a few of those years.
Generally I would not single out a lower-profile hire such as this one, but I think this hire is significant for the 49ers because Singletary lacks an administrative background in the NFL. He'll need to lean on someone with operational experience. The Rams have hired Bruce Warwick to handle similar duties for new coach Steve Spagnuolo.
I'm putting together a team-by-team list of staffs in the division and hope to post that in the near future. Most staffs are set or close to set, although the Cardinals will need a new offensive coordinator if Todd Haley departs.
