Niners draft the anti-Vernon Davis

The 49ers added a sure-handed tight end with less speed in the 40-yard dash than even some of the offensive linemen available in the draft.

Bear Pascoe, an experienced rodeo roper from Fresno State, should otherwise become fast friends with 49ers defensive end and resident cowboy Justin Smith, who grew up on a cattle ranch. But if the 49ers need a tight end to stretch the field, Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker remain the best options. Davis' hands haven't always served him well, but no tight end in the league is as fast.

Pascoe ran the 40-yard dash in 5.05 seconds. At 6-foot-5 and 251 pounds, though, he might have the potential to help as a blocking tight end. The 49ers did not bring back Sean Ryan.

Pascoe, known for his toughness, fits the profile for what Mike Singletary wants from his players. We'll see if there's a roster spot for him as the 184th player drafted in 2009.
