Tale of the Tape: White vs. Smith
Quarterback Alex Smith has become accustomed to harsh words from fans upset with the San Francisco 49ers in general and Smith in particular.
Now he's taking shots -- one shot, anyway -- from an NFL peer.
"Why is the 49ers wasting their time with alex smith," reads the dispatch from Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White's verified Twitter account. "They need to move on better yet try to get luck next year would be good for them."
White is not alone. Plenty of 49ers fans would love to replace Smith, who is not under contract for 2011, and see their team select Andrew Luck in the 2012 draft.
As for White, it's tough to find fault with the way he produces on the field. He's a fantastic receiver. It's also tough to fathom what would lead him to take time out of his day on April 15 to offer seemingly unsolicited analysis of the 49ers' quarterback situation.
Not that I'm complaining. Unvarnished opinions from players are welcome.
Informed opinions are even better, which is where we come in. Let's put together a fact sheet to help inform future 49ers analysis from White. Better yet, knowing that the low-keyed Smith would never fire back in kind, and borrowing from Paul Kuharsky's similarly themed item, let's come up with suggestions for what Smith should say in return.
Or have the last of Smith's defenders left the room?
Update: After claiming that Smith's performance had cost two coaches their jobs, White offered an amusing apology in which he said Smith is a great player and the 49ers should sign him to a five-year deal.
