On the way: What Nolan was thinking

Niners coach Mike Nolan said his team played its nickel defense throughout its Week 2 game against Seattle to avoid having to match the Seahawks' frequently changing offensive personnel.

Reporters questioned the strategy, pointing out the Seahawks' success on the ground. Nolan countered by saying the Seahawks were going to show lots of three-receiver looks even though Seattle was light on receivers, and switching defensive personnel would play into Seattle's hands.

I've researched this one and come across some interesting background information. I'll need to watch some more of the game on replay again before putting something together either late tonight or in the morning.

I also had a chance to check in with Todd Haley, the Cardinals' offensive coordinator, for a column that will run here Thursday.
