The 49ers moved up seven spots to a No. 6 ranking in total defense -- yards allowed -- after shutting out the Rams.

The Seahawks dropped from 11th to 16th after facing the Colts.

The lesson: Stay away from the Colts.

Seattle fell from a fourth-place tie to 16th in third-down defense, from fifth to 15th in red zone touchdown percentage allowed and from tied for ninth to 17th in points per game allowed.

The 49ers jumped from tied for fourth to second in points per game allowed.

Where NFC West defenses finished in yards allowed last season: San Francisco 13, Arizona 19, St. Louis 28, Seattle 30.
