Thanks to rondog96 for passing along this link to a news story on former running back Cullen Bryant's death at age 58.
Bryant, 6-foot-1 and 234 pounds, was a big back by any standards. He played 11 seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and two with the Seahawks, scoring 23 touchdowns. He was part of the first Rams team to play in a Super Bowl.
Off the field, Bryant fought the league's rules against free agency, filing a lawsuit at a time when players were fighting for freedoms current players can take for granted. This scanned newspaper story provides background.
I followed the Rams as a kid in the 1970s and counted a 1976 Cullen Bryant football card like this one among my prized possessions.
"He was a loving father and loved his kids and spent as much time with them as he could," sister-in-law Wanda Bryant told the Colorado Springs Gazette. "He was a good and loving brother-in-law."
I've put in a call to one of Bryant's former teammates and might follow up this item. I wasn't aware of his involvement in labor issues until reading his obituary.
