Alex Smith, Brandon Jacobs active for 49ers

NEW ORLEANS -- The San Francisco 49ers' list of inactive players Sunday features two notable absences.

Quarterback Alex Smith is active for the first time since suffering a concussion against St. Louis in Week 10. Running back Brandon Jacobs, a non-factor for the 49ers to this point in the season, is also active.

The 49ers have not announced whether Smith or second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick will start against the Saints. Widespread reports suggest Kaepernick will be the starter.

Jacobs gives the 49ers three true halfbacks active: starter Frank Gore, backup Kendall Hunter and Jacobs. Bruce Miller and former halfback Anthony Dixon are the fullbacks. Jacobs, signed from the New York Giants in free agency, has not played this season. Rookie second-round choice LaMichael James is again inactive.
