Too early to get a read on Rams' Long?

Keith from Charlottesville, Va., writes: As a proud UVA student I've been trying to keep up on the progress of Chris Long, but can't seem to find a single mention of him in any of these posts. He didn't get hit by a bus or anything did he? Can somebody update me on the status of the number two overall draft pick?

Mike Sando: Long didn't get hit by a bus, but some defensive ends might prefer that fate to lining up against Rams left tackle Orlando Pace in practice. Pace can make a Pro Bowl pass rusher disappear. A rookie should be no match for him.

I haven't been to Rams camp yet, so that explains the main reason I haven't had much on Long thus far. I'm looking forward to seeing him in the Rams' scrimmage Aug. 2. Reporters in St. Louis asked Rams coach Scott Linehan about Long today. His answer:

"I've been very impressed. First of all, he's an extremely humble kid. He knows he's got a lot of work to do. He doesn't get too fazed. If he has maybe a rough snap or he makes a mistake, you don't see him getting too hard on himself. He's pretty much moved on to the next play. Which, that's a pretty mature approach, I think that's going to be a mistake for him as a young guy."

Linehan might have spoken about Long's play on the field if the rookie were dominating through the first few days of camp. Instead he spoke about Long's humility and his mature approach, notably his ability to move on after a bad play. I'll make a point of watching Long when I get a chance.

Side note: Also regarding the Rams, cornerback Fakhir Brown could miss two or three weeks, including the first exhibition game, after injuring his shoulder.
