Around the NFC West: Franchise deadline

Around the NFC West: March 4, 2013

Good morning, NFC West.

The NFL deadline for naming franchise players arrives Monday at 4 p.m. ET and there are no indications NFC West teams plan to use the mechanism in 2013.

In some cases, teams averted tough decisions this offseason by reaching contract extensions with core players. That was the case with St. Louis’ Chris Long and James Laurinaitis as well as Seattle’s Max Unger, for example.

In other cases, teams appear willing to risk letting important players test the market when free agency begins March 12. St. Louis’ Danny Amendola and two San Francisco players, Dashon Goldson and Delanie Walker, could be examples.

Those who missed my Sunday report from the MIT Sloan Analytics Conference in Boston can check it out for additional thoughts regarding the value judgments teams make as they decide how best to use their salary-cap resources. Eighteen of 32 NFL teams were represented there, according to conference organizers. I'm checking to see if Seattle or Arizona were among them.

Update: No one registered for the conference was listed as being from the Seahawks or Cardinals. Atlanta, Buffalo, Carolina, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Jacksonville, Kansas City, New England, New Orleans, both New York teams, Oakland, Philadelphia, San Francisco and St. Louis had representatives registered.
