A weekly examination of the San Francisco 49ers' quarterback play.
Rewind: Kaepernick and the 49ers had their bye in Week 9. It came while they were on a hot streak, winning five games in a row to get to 6-2 overall. Colin Kaepernick’s season’s statistics aren’t overwhelming, but he has been efficient and a strong decision-maker. He is growing with 18 career starts under his belt.
Fast-forward: Kaepernick and the 49ers host Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The Panthers took Newton with the No. 1 pick in the 2011 draft, the same draft in which the 49ers took Kaepernick in the second round. I’m sure Kaepernick will want to show that he’s the better player in Sunday’s matchup.
Total QBR streak: In Week 7, Kaepernick had a Total QBR of 99.0 on a scale of 100. In Week 8, his QBR was 99.8, the highest in the NFL since the third week of the 2010 season. It's the first time a quarterback has delivered back-to-back QBRs of 99 or higher.
Prediction: Kaepernick will be inspired by Newton and outshine him. Kaepernick will be 17-of-25 for 231 yards and two touchdowns. He will also keep up his running ways from the past two games and have 61 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.
