Good morning, NFC West.
We wondered over the weekend whether Eric Mangini's hiring might threaten any current San Francisco 49ers assistant coaches. We could not have known many of those coaches would actually be threatened within 24 hours -- not by Mangini, but by a falling oak tree at a lawn-bowling club in San Jose, a 12-mile drive from 49ers headquarters.

Holly Rathman, wife of 49ers assistant and former Pro Bowl fullback Tom Rathman, reportedly saw the tree falling and warned others just in time.
"She saved our lives because she saw it before we heard it," Jim Sherman, treasurer of the San Jose Lawn Bowls Club, told San Jose Mercury News reporter Mark Emmons.
Two people unaffiliated with the 49ers were injured when the massive oak fell.
"One half of the tree fell on cars," Emmons wrote. "The other half fell on the bowling green where the party was being attended by 19 members of the Niners coaching staff and their wives."
Head coach Jim Harbaugh was not among those in attendance.
The 49ers and their coaches are scheduled to be on the field with players for organized team activities (OTAs) beginning Monday.
Every team in NFC West but the St. Louis Rams has OTAs scheduled for Monday through Thursday. The Rams have sessions set for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
