Jackson finally has reason to smile

The Rams' Steven Jackson, upset about Marc Bulger's benching and the Rams' overall ineptness, had reason to smile Thursday night. His Oregon State Beavers shocked USC in a game NFL personnel people watched with interest.

Jackson is among a dozen players on NFL 53-man rosters who played at Oregon State. Thirty-three came from USC (by the way, thanks for the idea, Matt ... not that I need excuses for diving into the database).

A quick look at former Oregon State and USC players in the NFC West:

  • Arizona: Matt Leinart and Deuce Lutui from USC.

  • St. Louis: Jackson and guard Roy Schuening from Oregon State.

  • San Francisco: Chilo Rachal from USC.

  • Seattle: Keary Colbert, Lofa Tatupu and Lawrence Jackson from USC. Practice-squad tight end Joe Newton is from Oregon State.

The Rams, Bengals and Browns each have two former Oregon State players.

Twenty-two of 33 former USC players reside in the NFC. The NFC West, NFC South and NFC East each employ six former USC players among their 53. No division has more. The AFC East and AFC West have only one apiece (the Patriots' Matt Cassel and the Raiders' Justin Fargas).

No team in the NFC West has players from both schools on its 53-man rosters. The Panthers, Bengals, Giants and Browns do have players from both programs, providing ample opportunity for locker-room banter. I'm thinking someone from USC might be seen wearing Oregon State gear as part of a wager gone wrong.
