Mathis on Irsay's comments: 'It's the norm'

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay went on one of his Twitter rants on Tuesday.

The Colts were back at the practice facility Wednesday preparing for this weekend’s game against the Tennessee Titans. And their reaction to their boss complaining about how they’ve played the past few weeks?

“He’s the only boss I’ve ever known, so it’s the norm for me,” linebacker Robert Mathis said. “He’s a winner. He’s used to winning. He likes winning. In order to change things, you have to win."

The Colts are 2-2 in their past four games, with the two losses coming by 29 and 30 points to Arizona and St. Louis.

Irsay, who has a history of voicing his frustration, fired off several tweets, including one that said, “We gotta get our heads out of r butts-WAKE UP!”

Mathis was asked if Irsay’s comments would motivate the Colts.

“If you need more motivation than this being your job and the threat of somebody taking your job every week, then you shouldn’t be in this league,” Mathis said.

Colts coach Chuck Pagano didn’t take Irsay’s criticism personal.

“We know the magnitude as coaches and players,” Pagano said. “We understand what the expectations are. I knew 30 years ago when I got into coaching. My dad told me what the expectations were going to be no matter what the situation is, no matter where you are. So as coaches we understand it. As players, they understand it. We’ve got a job to do and we’re going to work to get that job done. This team and staff has done a great job keeping the blinders on and staying focused.”
