CB Jason Verrett signs with Chargers

The San Diego Chargers announced that this year’s first-round selection, cornerback Jason Verrett signed a four-year contract with the team on Thursday.

The deal includes a fifth-year team option included in the contracts of all first-round picks.

With the Verrett signing, the Chargers have all six players from this year’s draft class under contract. The 5-9, 190-pounder out of TCU was selected No. 25 overall in this year’s draft.

Verrett is rehabbing from shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum, and has yet to fully participate in San Diego’s organized team activities on the field.

However, Verrett is expected to be ready for full participation in practice by August. Chargers defensive co-captain safety Eric Weddle expects Verrett to have an impact during his rookie season.

“He’s a great kid,” Weddle told Chargers.com. “He’s humble, extremely athletic, fast and quick-twitch muscles, which is what you need in a corner. Obviously, he’s dealing with some stuff. But we’re excited about him.

“When you get a secondary player early in the draft it’s great because you know he’s going to be a good player, and he’s going to be around here for a few years. And you just hope that you can push him, educate him and that will help him with the progression from the college to the NFL, and make it easy for him. We’re expecting big things from him, and he’s a guy mentality-wise that can handle that. Hopefully he’ll have a great year for us.”
