Steelers release first depth chart

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Pittsburgh Steelers released their first depth chart Sunday and, as Steelers.com’s Bob Labriola points out, it serves up few surprises.

A couple of things that caught my attention:

  • Sean Spence is listed behind Ryan Shazier and Vince Williams at weakside inside linebacker. Spence has practiced extensively with Williams on the second-team defense during camp. But instead of listing him No. 2 on the depth chart the Steelers have Terence Garvin behind Lawrence Timmons at strongside outside linebacker followed by rookie Jordan Zumwalt.

  • Tauren Poole is fourth on the depth chart at running back behind Le’Veon Bell, LeGarrette Blount and rookie Dri Archer. Poole is among a group of running backs trying to play their way onto the 53-man roster, and the former undrafted free agent has had a strong start to camp.

  • Adam Podlesh and Brad Wing are listed as the co-No. 1 punters. Podlesh should have the edge here based on his NFL experience but he has yet to report to camp with his wife due to give birth. The left-footed Wing is an intriguing prospect and the battle for this spot won’t really start until the preseason games. The Steelers are also keeping an eye on punters across the league should there be an injury at the position or neither Podlesh nor Wing performs well during the preseason.
