It was his scheduled day off after a day on, but coach Mike Smith said both Jones and outside linebacker Kroy Biermann are set to return to a normal practice routine after being limited throughout training camp.
"We're going to start increasing all of these guys as we get closer to the opening game of the regular season; the Saints game," Smith said. "It's important for us to have all of our guys ready to go that are going to play and have to go out and play 60 snaps. That's not possible if you're not practicing every day. So you're going to see, over the next 10 days, a change in our team in terms of the routine of who's practicing and who's not. ... The prescription has changed in terms of the number of reps [with] the guys and the days that they'll be working."
On the line: Smith was asked about Lamar Holmes' day working with the first team at right tackle: "Lamar is playing the right tackle with [Ryan] Schraeder this week, and I think he did a nice job," Smith said. "Lamar has played both on the left and the right side. It's not anything new for him. We had plans to get him cross-trained during this camp. And I think this gives us a lot more flexibility. Now we have three guys competing at the right tackle [including Gabe Carimi]. But we also have to have guys that can slide inside and play some guard. Some tackle is going to have to play some guard. We've got two that have done that: Gabe Carimi and Schraeder."
Back to work: Defensive tackle Corey Peters practiced for the second consecutive day after being restricted coming off last year's Achilles tear. Smith said Peters is way ahead of schedule in his return. Peters had complete faith in being ready for the regular season from the start. "If it was up to me, I would have tried to get back out there three or four weeks ago," Peters said. "But I think that it's been a good process. Thinking about it now, I'm happy that I waited."
Extra points: Tight end Mickey Shuler, who is battling Bear Pascoe for the backup job, is going through the concussion protocol and did not practice Tuesday. ... Wide receiver/special-teamer Courtney Roby was excused from practice to be back in Indianapolis with his wife for the birth of their child. ... Joe Hawley talked before practice about being mic'd up for "Hard Knocks." ... Steven Jackson (hamstring) and Carimi (ankle) were held out of practice.
