Most significant move: The biggest moves were the ones that were made Friday when the Oakland Raiders traded linebacker Sio Moore to Indianapolis for a sixth-round pick and cut quarterback Christian Ponder. Moore, arguably Oakland's best linebacker when Khalil Mack is at defensive end, wore out his welcome with the new staff and was jettisoned despite his talent. The release of Ponder means Oakland will roll with two quarterbacks -- expect rookie Cody Fajardo to join the practice squad -- and the backup will be Matt McGloin. Even though Ponder was the No. 2 quarterback all summer, McGloin was clearly the better player.
Trimming the defensive line: The Raiders were very deep at the defensive line, yet they kept eight defensive linemen (that's counting Khalil Mack as a defensive end although he will also play linebacker). Oakland cut some good young talent on the defensive front. They waived rookie pass-rusher Max Valles, a sixth-round pick, and Shelby Harris. Harris, a seventh-rounder last year, had a great preseason. I could see both potentially being claimed Sunday. Oakland also cut C.J. Wilson, who was a strong rotational player last year and Ricky Lumpkin, a young veteran who played well this summer. They were beaten out by the likes of Benson Mayowa and Denico Autry.
Money lost: The Raiders lost more than $4 million in guaranteed money given to Wilson, Ponder and Trent Richardson in free agency. Not something a team wants to make a habit of doing.
What's next: The Raiders will surely try to add some players through the waiver wire and perhaps free agency. The top position Oakland should look to add at is cornerback. Oakland doesn't have much experience there and it has been an unsteady spot. I could also see Oakland trying to add at running back, the offensive line and at safety, where Oakland has just three on the roster right now. Denver cut reserve cornerback Tony Carter. I could see Oakland having interest in him. He played under new Oakland coach Jack Del Rio the past three seasons. Another possible player Oakland could pursue is safety Chris Prosinski, who was cut by Philadelphia. Del Rio drafted him in Jacksonville. Oakland can use some depth at safety.
