Matt Ryan misses practice for personal reasons, could return Wednesday

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was not on the field for Tuesday’s practice while dealing with a personal matter.

The team said Ryan’s matter is not related to injury. Ryan was in the building during the morning but left for an appointment. He and his wife are expecting twins in April, but the team would not disclose if Ryan's absence was related to that.

The Falcons said Ryan could return to practice on Wednesday.

Backup quarterback Matt Schaub stepped in with the first-team offense and will remain until Ryan returns.

The Falcons hit the road to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Saturday’s divisional playoff game. Ryan grew up outside of Philadelphia.

Ryan hasn't missed a game since the 2009 season, when he was sidelined by turf toe. The Falcons gave no indication of Ryan possibly missing Saturday's playoff game as a result of the personal matter.

Ryan and wide receiver Julio Jones (ankle) were the only two Falcons not to participate in practice on Tuesday. Running back Devonta Freeman (knee) and wide receiver Mohamed Sanu (knee) both were limited.
