Rapid Reaction: Dolphins 14, 49ers 9

The 49ers couldn't stop a couple of little-known tight ends early in the game. They couldn't stop the very well-known Joey Porter on the final play.

In between, the 49ers continued to show signs of competence under interim coach Mike Singletary. They finished with a 25-11 lead in first downs. They converted 8 of 17 times (47 percent) on third down. They controlled the ball longer than 38 minutes while amassing a 318-248 advantage in total yards.

The defeat means the 49ers can't finish with a .500 record. Reaching .500 would have all but assured another season for Singletary. His status remains in limbo, but the 49ers have proven to be more competent. Will it be enough?
