Tom Benson addressed other owners

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson has not talked publicly about the punishments handed down by the NFL for the three-year bounty program his team ran.

But NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Benson addressed the situation with the league’s other owners Monday.

“He was very open with the clubs,’’ Goodell said. “He expressed his disappointment that this occurred and this was not what he’s all about and he expects to take whatever steps are necessary to make sure it doesn’t happen again.’’

The Saints issued a team statement after the punishments were announced. Coach Sean Payton and general manager Mickey Loomis issued a joint statement after the results of the league’s investigation first were released in early March. Payton also issued a statement after his one-year suspension was announced.

But the owner, the coach and the general manager have not spoken publicly since the results of the investigation were announced. A team spokesman said it’s unclear if Payton, Loomis or Benson will meet with the media during this week’s owners meeting.
