Melvin Ingram earns high praise

SAN DIEGO – Who better to ask about the hot-shot new pass-rusher in town than the quarterback?

Philip Rivers knows a few things about what it takes to be a dominant pass-rusher. So I went to him for the book on Chargers’ first-round pick Melvin Ingram.

“He’s explosive,” Rivers said without hesitation. “What stands out to me is he’s a football player. He played all over the place at South Carolina and he has been doing that here. He looks comfortable. You can tell he belongs. I’m glad we got him.”

After practice Friday, as he collected his thoughts after his first full week of NFL training camp, I got a chance to catch up with Ingram. I told about Rivers’ praise. Ingram beamed.

“That’s what motivates me,” Ingram said. “It’s great to hear that the leaders on this team are excited about me and what they expect me to do. It motivates to go be a dominant player."

As long as he gets to watch it from afar, I’m sure Rivers is all for it.
