J.J. Watt, radio row rock star

NEW ORLEANS -- Among active NFL players, none hanging around radio row at the Super Bowl news conferences have ranked as a bigger star than Houston defensive end J.J. Watt.

That’s saying a lot about his profile, which is getting closer and closer to rock star.

A year ago, I tracked him at the Super Bowl while he made the rounds wearing some sort of camera contraption on his head for Gatorade. He was relatively anonymous and easily approachable.

Today, Watt was promoting Axe Hair (and wearing a new Mohawk-ish haircut shaped with their spiking glue) and a decent swarm of radio producers tracked his every move hoping for a visit.

I managed a quick chat and spoke with him about the Defensive Player of the Year award he should win Saturday night, the Texans’ late-season fizzle and his mysterious goals that he won’t share but sets sky-high.

Here’s the interview from The Midday 180 on Nashville’s 104.5 The Zone.
