Jeff Garcia is right about Tim Tebow

Former four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Jeff Garcia hasn't been heard from much since he retired two years ago. But there is something about Tim Tebow that makes everyone voice their opinions.

Garcia is among the many who are confused about why the Jets still have Tebow on their roster. The Jets are holding out hope that Tebow carries some trade value. However, there has been virtually no interest around the NFL, and next week Tebow will report for New York's offseason program with little chance to be on its roster in September.

According to Garcia, who is now a quarterback instructor, what's the point?

"If there's going to be competition at the quarterback position, it's not going to come from Tim Tebow," Garcia told the USA Today this week. "Having Tebow there (last season) just became a distraction, more of a circus show. It's their decision, but from an outsider looking in, having Tebow there doesn't bring anything positive. It just brings distraction. For Mark, the main competition is going to be David Garrard and Greg McElroy."

For the record, the Jets have declared an open quarterback competition this season. But it's clear from last year's experience that Tebow will not get a legitimate chance to win the job against Mark Sanchez, Garrard and McElroy.

When Sanchez struggled last season, the Jets kept playing him as long as possible. Then, New York passed over Tebow for McElroy, who was the third-string quarterback. Tebow was never able to impress the coaching staff, led by head coach Rex Ryan, who is still running the show in New York.

As Garcia mentioned, having Tebow on the roster is simply a distraction. "Tebowmania" was a disaster in New York, and it would be wise for the Jets to cut their losses and move forward. The Jets holding out hope for a seventh-round pick that might never come doesn't make a lot of sense.
