Surprise! Dolphins trade up for Dion Jordan

DAVIE, Fla -- As I predicted this week in my blogger mock draft, the Miami Dolphins traded up with the Oakland Raiders at No. 3 in the NFL draft. However, most thought Miami would take an offensive tackle. That's where the surprise came in.

JordanJordanMiami moved up to select Oregon defensive end Dion Jordan. The Dolphins traded their first-round (No. 12) pick and second-round pick (No. 42) to make the selection. It’s somewhat of a surprise, but the Dolphins were looking for a compliment to Pro Bowl defensive end Cameron Wake. Miami now has two rush options to pressure the quarterback.

There are some questions over whether Jordan can fit in a 4-3 defense. He's not a bulky defensive end and is often compared to the wiry former Dolphin Jason Taylor.

Even Jordan was surprised by the pick.

"I wasn’t expecting that,” Jordan said on the ESPN broadcast of joining Miami. “But I’m ready to go to work.”

Many thought Miami should have traded up to get a left tackle. Oklahoma’s Lane Johnson was still on the board and was taken one pick later by the Philadelphia Eagles. So this move for Jordan will be questioned if Miami doesn't eventually get quality protection for second-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

We will have more on this pick and others in the AFC East later tonight.
