Barth suffered a torn Achilles tendon Friday while playing in a charity basketball game, according to the team. He had surgery Monday, but will be placed on the reserve/non-football injury list as he spends the season rehabilitating.
Losing Barth is a big blow to the Buccaneers. Barth has been one of the league’s better young kickers in recent years. Since joining the Bucs in 2009, Barth has made 84.3 percent of his field goal attempts, including a 2011 season in which he made 92.9 percent of his attempts.
But Tynes isn’t a bad alternative. The nine-year veteran has made 81.5 percent of his career field goal attempts. Last season with the Giants, Tynes made 33 of 39 field goal attempts and all 46 of his extra point attempts for a career-high 145 points, which ranked second in the NFL.
