Buccaneers liven up practice

TAMPA, Fla. -- Greg Schiano has a reputation for being a hard-edged coach. But he also has a lighter side.

Schiano spiced up Saturday morning’s practice with something outside of the routine. During team drills, the entire offense or defense would drop and do pushups after various plays.

“At this point, we wanted something to keep it going,’’ Schiano said. “It’s the fourth day of a four-day stretch and we’re just making it competitive. Since we’re making it competitive, let’s have a little prize for the winner and punishment for the loser.’’

“It was very balanced, back and forth, back and forth. Sometimes as a head coach I don’t want to say you fix things, but you try to aim them in that direction. I didn’t have to do that. I just let it unfold.’’

In other news out of Saturday morning's practice, receiver Vincent Jackson was given the day off. Schiano said Jackson's wife gave birth to a baby boy. Wide receiver Mike Williams (hamstring) and defensive end Adrian Clayborn (groin) also were held out of practice, but Schiano was optimistic they'll return to practice within a few days.

At one point, Schiano was seen doing pushups. He appeared to be doing more than the sets of 10 his players were doing.

“A lot,’’ Schiano said with a laugh. “I’ve got to pay for all our sins.’’
