Richardson: Luck is a rocket scientist

INDIANAPOLIS – New Indianapolis Colts running back Trent Richardson joined “Mike & Mike” on Monday morning, just hours after the team returned from San Francisco following its impressive 27-7 victory over the 49ers.

Richardson, who finished with 35 yards on 13 attempts, talked about what it was like to be traded from Cleveland last week and also playing with quarterback Andrew Luck.

Richardson wasted his day going through a full practice at the Browns’ facility and sitting in the ice tub only to hear from a friend that he had been traded after he left the complex.

“’Man what are you talking?,’” Richardson said to his friend. “And the next minute I turn on the radio and they’re saying I’m being traded. Oh my God. It’s a lot to take in. At first it was bitter sweet, but it’s been a big blessing.”

Much had been made about Richardson having to hear about the trade on the radio. His agent had actually tried calling him, but Richardson didn’t answer the phone.

Richardson said he was initially shocked. Like most people outside of the Browns front office, Richardson couldn’t understand why Cleveland gave up on him so quick after taking him with the No. 3 overall pick in 2012.

“It makes me have a chip on my shoulder,” he said. “I never want that taste in my mouth again. I don’t know if it was the best thing for them. But for me, I really feel like it was one of the best moves for me that could ever happen. I was willing to stay there and work and grind it out.”

Richardson is a better situation. The Browns aren’t in the same league as the Colts. The Colts should be a playoff team for years to come. The same can’t be said about the Browns. It’s anybody’s guess when they’ll become a playoff team again.

Richardson plans to be taking handoffs from Luck for a long time.

“First of all, Andrew is the smartest person I have ever met,” Richardson said. “He’s a rocket scientist. This man has about four or five audibles in one play. He is the man. First pick of the draft and the third pick, it’s a blessing.”
