Aaron Smith out for the season

Smith The Pittsburgh Steelers put starting defensive end Aaron Smith on injured reserve Tuesday, ending his 2009 season. He injured his shoulder in last weekend’s win over the Detroit Lions.

This is a big loss as Smith was one of the team’s most important players on defense. He was great at stuffing the run and was able to pressure the quarterback when given the opportunity. The 11-year veteran also was one of Pittsburgh’s most consistent players.

The Steelers signed rookie defensive end Ra’Shon "Sonny" Harris to take Smith’s roster spot. But it will be up to backups Travis Kirschke, Nick Eason and rookie Ziggy Hood to step up in Smith’s absence for the rest of the season.

Pittsburgh (3-2) hosts the Cleveland Browns (1-4) Sunday at Heinz Field.
