Before the transaction becomes official, Irving has to pass a physical.
By rule, Irving has to be on the Cowboys’ 53-man roster for three weeks, but the team is short of defensive linemen with Greg Hardy suspended one more game and Randy Gregory out with a high-ankle sprain. They have Tyrone Crawford, Nick Hayden and Ken Bishop at defensive tackle with Jack Crawford having the ability to play both spots.
The Cowboys liked what they saw in the preseason from Irving even though the Chiefs play a 3-4 scheme. He has some off-field baggage, having been dismissed from Iowa State’s team in 2014 following an incident at a festival in Ames, Iowa, in which he was charged with fifth-degree theft, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief. He had a domestic abuse charge dropped from an incident in 2013.
In 32 games at Iowa State, Irving, 6-7, 273 pounds, had 44 tackles, three sacks and returned an interception for a touchdown. He also had 7.5 tackles for loss, eight pass deflections, three blocked kicks and forced a fumble.
