Falcons shake things up at No. 2 QB

The Atlanta Falcons just announced a bit of a shakeup at backup quarterback.

The Falcons said they have released veteran backup quarterback Chris Redman and signed quarterback Luke McCown.

Dominique Davis has had an impressive preseason, while Redman struggled. Some may take this as a sign that the Falcons are ready to turn to Davis, an undrafted rookie, as the top backup to Matt Ryan. But I wouldn’t get too carried away with that school of thought -- at least not immediately.

McCown recently was released by the New Orleans Saints and didn’t show much in his preseason opportunities. But McCown spent the past three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. In case you’ve forgotten, Atlanta coordinator Dirk Koetter’s last job was in Jacksonville.

At this point in his career, I don’t think anyone has great expectations for McCown. But he’s a guy that knows Koetter’s offensive system.

He can come in and keep the seat warm until Davis is firmly ready to move up to the No. 2 job.
