David Backes to wear the 'C' for St. Louis

The St. Louis Blues named David Backes the 20th captain in franchise history on Friday.

Barret Jackman, Jamie Langenbrunner, Andy McDonald and Alexander Steen were named assistant captains.

Backes, 27, joins an impressive lineup of past Blues captains, which includes Wayne Gretzky, Brett Hull, Bernie Federko, Al MacInnis and Scott Stevens.

Drafted by St. Louis in 2003, Backes has played 364 games in a Blues uniform, compiling 218 points. He earned his first All-Star selection this past season.

Langenbrunner was named an assistant after joining the Blues via free agency this offseason. He previously was the captain of the New Jersey Devils from 2007-2011 and Team USA during the 2010 Olympics.

Jackman is the longest tenured Blues player as he enters his 10th season with the team. McDonald is entering his fourth full season in St. Louis and 11th NHL season, while Steen is beginning his third full season with the Blues.
