Rumblings: Coyotes hope for quick turnaround, not total overhaul of team

Sometimes when I get on TV, what my brain wanted to say isn’t quite what actually comes out of my mouth.

And no question, when I suggested last week on TSN’s Insider Trading that the Arizona Coyotes were going to "blow things up," I got a little over-excited.

We’re not talking about an overhaul in the desert, but yes, obviously some bodies are going out the door.

The Coyotes are going to get younger and move their pending UFAs, but there’s already a pretty good young nucleus to build around, so we’re not talking a long-term thing here. Hopefully for Arizona it will be a quick turnaround in one or two years.

No question they’d like to get a top-2 pick in June to get one of the two generational picks.

And they hope to recoup as much as possible from unrestricted free agents such as Antoine Vermette, Zbynek Michalek and David Moss.

The real question is what happens with star blueliner Keith Yandle, who still has a year and a half left on his deal. One source from a rival NHL team told me Coyotes general Don Maloney is more likely to wait until June to gather up a bigger auction on Yandle rather than move him now; although obviously it depends how desperate a team gets in its offer on Yandle between now and March 2.

Either way, the sense in Arizona is that hopefully the Coyotes can rebuild this thing quickly. They’ve got a strong nucleus around veteran captain Shane Doan and two-way center Martin Hanzal, young core guys such as Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Mikkel Boedker, and young blueliners Brandon Gormley, Michael Stone and Connor Murphy.

Don’t forget prospects such as Max Domi, Christian Dvorak, Brendan Perlini, Tyler Gaudet, Lucas Lessio, Laurent Dauphin, Ryan MacInnis, Henrik and Philip Samuelsson, and Anton Karlsson.

If Arizona can get Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel in the June draft, this team can possibly turn this thing quickly. We shall see.
