As we count down to the opening of the basketball season, let’s take a look at an opponent on North Carolina’s schedule ....
Opponent: Virginia Tech
Date: Feb. 2 (in Chapel Hill, N.C.)
Series results: UNC leads 62-13 (The Tar Heels beat the Hokies at Virginia Tech last season.)
Virginia Tech last season: 16-17, 4-12 in the ACC
Foe to know: Erick Green, 6-3 guard, senior
Green was a second-team All-ACC selection last season after averaging 15.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists, and he’ll be counted on to lead in new coach James Johnson’s first season.
The Winchester, Va., product participated in both Chris Paul’s and Deron Williams’ skills camps over the summer, and his performance in the backcourt will be key considering the Hokies lost two forwards (leading rebounder Dorian Finney-Smith, who transferred to Florida, and recruit Montrezl Harrell, who opted to sign with Louisville) after former coach Seth Greenberg was fired.
Tidbits: This marks Johnson’s first college head-coaching gig after 19 years as an assistant coach. … The Hokies were 11th in the ACC in shooting percentage last season, making only 42 percent of their field goals.
