More ankle injuries for Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Add starting shooting guard Dexter Strickland and reserve forward Desmond Hubert to the growing list of North Carolina ankle injuries this season.

Coach Roy Williams said each player sprained an ankle Wednesday.

“I’ve got a unique team,’’ Williams said. “It’s my first time in 24 years as a head coach that I’ve had two guys hurt on an off day. I don’t know what the crap’s going on, but Desmond and Dexter, neither of them practiced yesterday [Thursday] because they sprained their ankles on an off day. Classes are tough around here.

Kidding aside, William said the players were injured when they were going through workouts on their own Wednesday; each player stepped on someone else’s foot.

Asked if they would be OK, Williams responded: “I have no idea.”

The third-ranked Tar Heels were scheduled to practice late Friday afternoon before leaving for Florida State, where they play the Seminoles on Saturday.

This isn’t the first (or second, or third) time this year that a Tar Heel’s status has been up in the air because of an ankle.

Sophomore Harrison Barnes, freshman P.J. Hairston and freshman James Michael McAdoo (twice) have all been declared questionable/doubtful for games this season because of sprained ankles.

All played.
