CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina coach Roy Williams has 645 victories, fifth most amongst active Division I coaches. But he said he can’t imagine ever reaching 903 – the mark Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski will try to set tonight, to surpass Bobby Knight as the winningest men’s basketball coach in Division I history.
“The most amazing thing is, to get there, you’ve got to do it for so long,'' Williams said during his Tuesday news conference. "I don’t see coaches 20 years from now lasting as long as we have, and we haven’t lasted as long as Coach [Dean] Smith and all those other coaches did, because the demands off the court and the stresses, and the things that you have to go through. You’re responsible for everything that happens, so many times.
“Mike has just done an amazing job, an amazingly consistent job, amazingly consistent at a high, high level. It’s just off the charts to me, I don’t know how many we’ve won, but I know it’s no where near 900, and you just have to sit back and applaud him for what he’s done.”
