UNC opponent preview: Indiana

As we count down to the first day of basketball practice (Oct. 12), let’s take a look at an opponent on North Carolina’s basketball schedule ...

Opponent: Indiana

Date: Nov. 27 at 9:30 p.m. ET in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge

Game location: Bloomington, Ind.

Series results: Hoosiers lead 7-5 (Last matchup was in the 2004 ACC/Big Ten Challenge, when UNC won 70-63 on the road)

Indiana last season: 27-9, 11-7 in the Big Ten. Lost to Kentucky in the NCAA regional semifinals

Foe to know: Cody Zeller, 7-0 F, sophomore

Don’t expect the Zeller parents, Steve and Lorri, to wear their specially-made half-Indiana-half-UNC shirts to this one.

Now that last year’s ACC Player of the Year, Tyler Zeller, is in the NBA, their collegiate allegiance turns to Hoosiers big man Cody, who is aiming to bring another national title to the family. The pre-season All-American averaged 15.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.2 blocks last season.

Last year in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Cody recorded 19 points and 9 rebounds in a win at NC State. His parents -- wearing their half-and-half shirts -- missed the end of that come-from-behind victory because they left the game early in order to catch Tyler’s game down the road in Chapel Hill. Cody, though, should have their full attention (as well as that of defenses around the country) this season.

Tidbits: This will mark the first matchup between these teams since the Sean May-Raymond Felton-Rashad McCants-led Tar Heels won in Bloomington the same season they won the NCAA championship. But this time around, it’s the Hoosiers who are expected to compete for the national title. In April, ESPN’s Andy Katz had them rated No. 1 in his way-early rankings.
