Shortly after the announced two-game suspension Sunday of Cierre Wood and Justin Utupo, Notre Dame released its opening week depth chart. Nothing too surprising was revealed -- Theo Riddick slid up after Wood's suspension -- but there are a few items worth noting.
George Atkinson III is Riddick's backup and will likely see more carries now, too. That will be interesting to watch, as he has dazzled on kickoffs and later dazzled from the backfield in the spring game, but fumbled twice. He could make a strong impression these next two weeks.
The second-team offensive line, from left tackle to right, is: Ronnie Stanley, Conor Hanratty, Mike Golic Jr., Hanratty and Nick Martin. Golic, of course, is the No. 1 right guard. Stanley is one of five true freshmen on the two-deep, joining Davonte' Neal (slot), Sheldon Day (end), Romeo Okwara (dog) and KeiVarae Russell (corner), who is the only listed starter among true freshmen. Also, Scott Daly is the No. 2 long-snapper.
Louis Nix is the No. 1 noseguard.
Ben Councell is the No. 1 dog linebacker. Prince Shembo is the No. 1 cat, with Ishaq Williams backing him up. Jarrett Grace is the No. 2 at both inside linebacker spots, with Carlo Calabrese suspended.
Nick Tausch is the place-kicker, while Kyle Brindza is the kickoff man. John Goodman and Riddick are backing up Neal returning punts. Riddick and Cam McDaniel are backing up Atkinson on kickoff returns.
